Japan's Condom Mascot, “Com-chan”
“Com-chan” is a Japanese plush Yuru-kyara character resembling a condom is rumored to have become the only official condom mascot of Kanagawa Prefecture located in the southern Kant region of Japan, which includes the Greater Tokyo Area.
A primary function of a Yuru-kyara is to represent a city or prefecture, as a mascot that delivers a strong message to their local community. [Japan Trends]
The Yokohama AIDS Action and Information Center says that Com-chan was created to be an educational tool for the expansion of AIDS awareness among youth culture in Japan, which shockingly is somewhat low. However, it does not surprise me that a country that wraps their trains with kitschy characters like Hello Kitty and Pokémon would implement an animated condom mascot for the purpose of serving an important message to their young inhabitants.
We want to hear from you! What do you think about Com-chan, the condom mascot? Do you think Com-chan effectively appeals to Japan’s youth to spread AIDS awareness? Leave your comments below...
